Greg and I went to the roller derby last night. Greg enjoyed it, but I didn't like it as much as I thought I would. In fact, I found the whole thing down right boring.

The game is split into two thirty minute halves, and each half contains an unspecified numbers of Jams. A Jam is a two minute play during which each team's Jammer (point scorer) tries to lap as many members of the opposite team as possible. They receive one point for each member of the opposite team they pass. There's more to it than that, but that's the gist.

Between each Jam the teams rotate players and are given thirty seconds to set up for the next Jam. Changing players every two minutes, sometimes less, kept the game from building any momentum. Just as I was getting excited about what was going on, the Jam would end and thirty seconds of shuffling would commence. Lame.

I also found the scoring system really hinky. I felt it gave an unfair advantage to whichever team was in the lead and prevented the trailing team from catching up. There were times when I was certain that one team or the other had scored, but when I looked at the scoreboard, discovered they hadn't. I had no clue what was going on even with the rule sheet sitting in my lap the whole time.

Finally, I didn't really like the crowd which was made almost entirely of hipsters from Williamsburg. They were all white, tattooed, pierced, and obviously well off. They seemed almost offended they had to sit in cramped, smelly, college court bleachers to watch the game.

While I'm glad we went, and I'm glad Greg had fun, it's not something I'd ever want to do again.

And I like horror movies, I really do. Just not that one.

I should really watch Halloween again. Haven't seen it since my brother made me watch it when I was 8. I have no recollection of it whatsoever.

I love the original Elm Street. But 3? Dream Warriors? Seriously?

Senior year of college me and a couple of friends made it our mission to watch the entire Elm Street and Friday the 13th series. Good times, good times.

Descent

Dude, that movie scared me so much I slept with my light on for a MONTH (I was 28 at the time :-/), well exceeding the previous record holder, The Ring, which only made me sleep with my light on for a week.

"The Ring"

that was good, too! (the original Japanese version).

"But 3? Dream Warriors? Seriously? "

YES!! IT's FUN!!

"Dude, that movie scared me so much I slept with my light on for a MONTH"

BOO! I really think it's going to be considered a CLASSIC, just as Halloween is now!

OH I also like SAW.

I haven't seen the Japanese version, just the American remake. After I saw Audition I decided Japanese horror wasn't really for me.

YES!! IT's FUN!!

I guess, in a hilarious, craptastic, mid-eighties sort of way.

Strangely, I didn't actually like Descent. The ending was a let down for me. Yet, it was obviously good horror because it scared the shit out of me, and I suppose I like it for that reason. That's also the reason I will never ever watch it again for the rest of my life. I won't watch The Ring again either even though I loved it.

And SAW?! You LIKED Saw?! Now there is a movie I regret paying full price to see in the theatre. I thought it was stupid and pointless. It's a good thing I saw it with a guy who was more interested in making out with me and getting his hand up my shirt than actually watching the film. Otherwise the outing would have been a complete waste.

lol I have to defend myself on SAW more than any other movie!

I thought it was scary and clever! and well-acted.
Saw 2: good, Saw 3: OK, Saw 4: good, Saw 5: very good, made me want to watch ALL of `em again!

"I saw it with a guy who was more interested in making out with me and getting his hand up my shirt"

lucky guy!

"Strangely, I didn't actually like Descent. "

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!

"The ending was a let down for me. Yet, it was obviously good horror because it scared the shit out of me, and I suppose I like it for that reason. That's also the reason I will never ever watch it again for the rest of my life."

I would've preferred she escaped, but I understand the point. It makes it even MORE scary.

"Audition"

never seen that one!

"hilarious, craptastic, mid-eighties"

pfffffffft! try awesometastic 80's way! FREDDY!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have preferred she escaped, too. I got to the end and just thought, "Wow, I just spent two hours watching what has turned out to be a completely hopeless story." I know that's exactly what the director was going for, but...what's the point? When I get to the end of a book, or a movie, or a TV show I want to understand why the story teller thought this was an important story for me to hear, and I didn't get that with Descent.

Have you seen the remake of Nightmare on Elm Street? I refuse to on the grounds that no one could possibly be as good in the role of Freddy as Robert England.

OH also:

People Under the Stairs: GOOD
Shocker: OK

Wes Craven decided to make a more commercial movie (Shocker) and it WASN'T successful.

The Cave: good, but is as much an action movie as horror.

I thought of you tonight when I saw that the Steve Miller Band will be playing the Beacon theatre near my mom's place next month.

As for Audition:

It's weird and Japanese. I didn't think it was scary. Other people disagree with me. Here's the synopsis care of IMDB:

A lonely Japanese widower whose son is planning to move out of the house soon expresses his sadness to a friend and fellow film producer, who becomes inspired to hold an audition for a non-existent film so that the widower can select a new potential bride from the resulting audition pool. The widower ultimately becomes enamored with and fascinated by one particular young woman...but first impressions can often be horribly wrong

But only in the most FANTASTICALLY, LOW BUDGET, CAMPY sense! Great film making, it is not. But it's one of the most unintentionally funny movies ever! I love the entire franchise! I love Jason Voorhees, I love the absurdity of the whole endeavor.

I was just bored with it. It's the TOTALLY COMMERCIAL, hollywood-style soulless reaction to the massively superior HALLOWEEN. Notable only for effects work by Tom Savini.

I've seen all the Evil Dead movies. One night during my freshman year of college, while I was moping over being unceremoniouosly dumped by my first college...whatever the fuck he was, my friends got together and said "We're making you watch the Evil Dead movies. They will cheer you up." And they were right! We watched 1 and 2 back to back, and for those four or so hours I didn't think about my guy problems once!

I...am hesitant to see Shaun of the Dead mainly because the people in my life who like it are people who have totally different taste in movies than I do.
