The Promise

morrigirlI got an envelope from Knox College in the mail today. Inside were copies of each and every one of my Perkins Loan Promissory notes, each with a stamp on the lower right hand corner that said "PAID."
They're all there. The oldest was signed more than ten years ago, dated September 9, 1998, my first week at Knox. Each piece of paper contains the exact same scraggly signature I still sign on time sheets and credit card receipts. I don't know why, but for some reason I feel as though they should look different. The most recent was signed in 2002, seven years ago. So much time. You'd think things, even signatures, would change with time.
But, they don't.
