The Fifth Element
May. 22nd, 2007 03:35 pmMySpace has been incredibly good to me over the last couple weeks. It has enabled me to get back in touch with two very dear friends from high school who I fell out of contact with after graduation, James and Dwayne. Along with Phillip, my single most beloved guy friend in high school, and this kid named Leo who I didn't know at all, they made up a clique known as The Fam. Though I doubt any of them would agree with the assertion, I like to take credit for assembling The Fam, because even though we were all in the same class, they all met through me.
I met Dwayne my first day of tenth grade. He was new, had just transferred into MVA, and got put in my advisory. By means of some weird random get-to-know you exercise Dwayne and I were paired up and forced to carry on a conversation. We were both a little shy so the conversation didn't get too far but he seemed like a nice guy.
Dwayne wound up in my class that year, as did James and Phillip. (It should be noted that I did not go to a normal high school where you travel from class to class alone and have different people in every class. At MVA you were put into "sections" of roughly 15-20 students and they were the people you stayed with for the whole year. Sections traveled as a group to each individual class. You had all your classes with the same people. There were four sections within every grade.) James was not a new kid, at least not by then. He'd transferred to MVA half way through freshman year and I, along with a nice chunk of my grade, had decided we HATED him. He was arrogant, egotistical, conceited, and stand-offish. He thought he was better than everyone and he got into more than a couple fights that year as a result. I was not happy to find out I was gonna have to sit through class with him every day. But, by some miracle of God he entered tenth grade a totally different person. Sure he was still arrogant and egotistical, only now in an over the top and self-consciously funny way. He was more talkative, friendlier, and just outright likable. Over the course of a few weeks he won me over and we began a really fun kind of irritating older brother and annoying little sister typed friendship that lasted for the rest of our high school days.
I met Phillip when we were randomly assigned as partners for a group project in Humanities that first week. He had just transferred in as well and didn't have many friends. Initially Phill really took a liking to my best friend Chanel who was also in our group, and I just sort of sat around and allowed myself to be entertained by their flirtatious banter. When Chanel started missing school on a regular basis (she transferred out of MVA soon after) Phillip started directing his banter at me. The two of us really hit it off. We were both similarly egotistical and thought we were smarter than everyone else in our class (though neither of us were vocal about it which is why we never drew anyone's wrath the way James initially had), we both enjoyed debating "big issues" like religion and politics, and we both enjoyed writing. We spent that entire year sitting in back of Humanities class having theology debates, writing run-on stories, and playing tic-tac-toe.
During one of our louder discussions on religion Dwayne and James perked up their ears, listening in for a few minutes before diving in with us. None of the guys really knew each other, but they all knew me so I got to make the introductions when we eventually paused for breath. After that the two smartasses in the back row turned into four and we were so inattentive, so wrapped up in our own special form of learning, eventually our teachers had to separate us.
Dwayne, James, and Phillip spent lunch hours together and grew really close really fast. I already had a group of my own so there came a point where I had to recognize that though these guys were undoubtedly my friends, they weren't exactly my clique. That was fine. During tenth grade they dubbed themselves The 'Mates, short for classmates. By eleventh grade they had grown close enough to rename themselves The Fam. They never forgot about me though. All through tenth and eleventh grade they hugged, joked, and whispered me through every class. Phillip and I became such good friends he would often hold my hand while we were chilling in the quad before class. People started to think we were dating. We weren't. We never did. We just didn't think of each other like that. Phill was really cute though, and once it was established that I was not his girlfriend, girls who had crushes on him started pulling me to the side, shyly asking if I could put in a good word for them with Phill because, as they always pointed out, "he listens to you." Phill holds a really special place in my heart. He was the first guy to ever show me any public displays of affection. He didn't care who saw or what they thought, he just showed me love and made no apologies for it.
It wasn't until senior year that our teachers wised up and split our motley little crew up, placing each of us into one of the four sections. No more theology debates during Humanities, no more tic tac toe during math. Senior year was also when Leo gained entry into The Fam. He was an old friend of Dwayne's, and due in large part to our group's separation, I never really got to know him. But Phill and I were still cool, stealing fifteen minutes here and there to sit in the quad every few weeks and catch each other up on our lives. And of course James and Dwayne couldn't pass me in the hall without asking for a hug. That year Dwayne got a job as a cashier in the supermarket where I usually went to buy groceries so we got to shoot the shit whenever I went in. Once he opened a register just for me after catching me stuck at the end of a long and slow moving check-out line.
All the members of The Fam had nicknames, none of which I can recall. Senior year was the year I got mine. I was hanging out with the guys in the cafeteria one lunch period and the subject of nicknames came up. I already had about a billion but they all decided I needed a Fam specific one. A few throw away sugestions were tossed out before...I think it was Phill...blurted out "The Fifth Element." The guys nodded and smiled, agreeing that within our tiny circle I was the Fifth Element. At the time I had never seen the movie, and though I accepted the name, I was afraid they'd pulled a fast one on me, assigned me a nick name that was humorously insulting. I didn't learn what the Fifth Element actually was until half way through college. When sharing high school memories with college and post-college friends I would occasionally recount my experiences with The Fam, always including the story about the nickname. And if there were any girls in the group they would all inevitably go "Awwwwwww." For a long time no one would tell me what was so sweet about it. "Watch the movie," they told me. But one day I got someone, I don't remember who, to spill it. And even though I hadn't seen any of the guys in years by that point, it still made me grin like an idiot. For those of you not in the know The Fifth Element is love.
Periodically I'd run Google, MySpace, and Friendster searches on Phillip, James, and Dwayne just to find out how they were doing and what they were up to. I'd never come up with anything until a few weeks ago when I searched Dwayne's name on MySpace and found that he had (finally!) created a profile. I was so excited when I found it! See, Dwayne dropped out of MVA a few short months before graduation and presumably fell off the planet because I'd never heard a thing about where he eventually wound up. Well, apparently he's living down in South Carolina these days. I friended him and wrote him a brief email. He friended me back but has yet to respond to the email. He probably won't and that's okay. I'm just crazy ass happy to know he's alive and well and looking good as ever.
Finding Dwayne gave me the courage to message Phill. I came across the profile of a Phill S. back in December, only it didn't contain an actual pictures of the person it belonged to. So, even though this profile belonged to a guy with the same name as my Phill, who was the same age and lived in the same place, I couldn't be 100% sure it was him so I didn't try to make contact. I checked back though, and pretty soon profiles of people from our graduating class started turning up on his friends list. After being friended by Dwayne I finally wrote Phill. Unfortunately, the guy hasn't signed on in two months so it might be a while before he gets it.
Then, yesterday I got a cryptic email and friend request from someone I didn't recognize. I checked out the person's profile, clicked through the pictures, and found none other than the illustrious James staring back at me. I cannot tell you how ecstatic I was. I wrote him back immediately and told him how happy I was that he found me. I figured he must have found me through mutual friends, after all that's how I stumbled upon all of the MVA people I currently have on my list. But I checked, and we don't have any friends or groups in common. I don't know how he found me, but I really don't care. He found me and I got another email from him this morning, and I'm just happy!
I have this great photo of my guys that I took junior year of high school. I had it taped up in my dorm room first year at Knox. Maybe I'll scan it when I get the chance so I can share it with you :-D
And James posted this meme on MySpace yesterday. I don't normally like movie memes, but I enjoyed this one.
