What About Your Friends?
Apr. 17th, 2007 02:58 pmDo you ever wonder how you became friends with your friends? I do. I can never recall how it happened. I remember how I met my friends, what I was wearing, what was first said, but I can't remember how we went from that first "hello" to exchanging secrets and stroking each others hair when we cried. That little piece of lost time, the how, has always fascinated me. Sure, there are plenty of psychological studies that tell us how and why we become friends with people, but I'm not particularly interested in generalities. I wish I could specifically remember how Tina became my best friend. Or how Gayle or Heather did. Because the how is special, magical even. It's the space where two people come together and click. And it's not one point in time. It's many points; many moments. And the how isn't just the moments when we click, it's also the moments we decide to keep each other. The moments we decide we want to see each other again the next day. When did we decide this? How did we? When did we know the relationship had become permanent as oppose to passing? How did both parties come to the same decision? I wish I knew.
