A couple years back, in a fit of nostalgia and boredom, I decided to write about how I met each and every person on my friends list who I knew in real life. I posted roughly five entries over a period of three weeks and told twenty stories. I love those entries. They bring back such fabulous memories. But, I never finished them. I got lazy and stopped when I only had four more stories to tell. Since then the number of people on my friends list that I have known in real life has increased slightly, so now I have two additional stories to relate. I think it's time to tell the final seven, as well as the few stories of how I met some of my favorite LJ online friends that I promised.

Before I begin I must warn you that the following memories are not among my most distinct. By the time my senior and super senior years at Knox rolled around I'd pretty much cemented my social circle, and with only a year or so left in my sentence...I mean, education, I wasn't actively looking for new friends, so I didn't take such close note of where, when, and how I met people. Many of these stories will consist of a single sentence and I apologize for that. But just remember, even if your story is short it doesn't mean you are not treasured. I started writing these descriptions as a way to let you all know how much I loved you then and how much I still love you.

For those of you who would like to read or re-read the first twenty stories...

Jay, Tina, Moses, and Gayle can be found here.

Ariel, Jennie O., Chris, Cori, and Wes can be found here.

Heather F. and Gemma can be found here.

Evie, Gabe, Jen, Amy, Dave, and Lauren are here.

Adrienne, Adam, and Heather H. are here.

Without further adieu, I give you...

[livejournal.com profile] satinalien - Before I can start on any of the new stories I have to revise an old one. The story I previously wrote about how I met Lauren is totally wrong. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. I realized this over a year ago while I was reading one of those "Leave a comment and I will answer the following ten questions about you" memes that she had posted in her LJ. I commented, she answered, and one of the questions was "How did you meet this person?" She answered we had met in Beginning Modern Dance class. And she was right. Reading that single sentence made a light bulb go on inside my head and suddenly I could see the entire scene all over again.

The fall 2001 Beginning Modern Dance class was big by Knox standards. There were about 40 or 50 students enrolled, most of whom were girls with previous dance experience. Since it was September and this was a 100 level class I knew the crowd of unfamiliar faces had to be composed of first years. As I sat on the floor of the memorial gym scanning the group I started to do that thing all girls do, look for people I thought I might like to be friends with. By and large, I didn't see anyone. Everyone was too tall, thin, chatty...girlie. No one looked like me.

But then my eyes fell on this short young woman in bright blue dance pants with the most gorgeous head of dark brown curls. I took one look at her and thought "She's got to be Jewish or Italian. And I'll bet anything she's from the northeast." I knew immediately that I wanted to be friends with her.

When the instructor asked everyone to go around and say their names, majors, and year I found out she was not, in fact, from the northeast. She was from Illinois and her name was Lauren. I was disheartened but my ears perked up when she said that she was a first year creative writing major. "Ah ha!" I thought. "I knew it! I knew there was something about her. She's a creative writing major. She IS my people!" Unfortunately, I never got up the nerve to actually speak to her in class. I think we may have exchanged a word or two while waiting for our turn to prance, or in my case, fumble, across the floor in front of the entire class, but we never really talked to one another until that night we were asked to read together during auditions for the fall term one acts.

After that she fell in with the gaming crew and since I was friendly with most of them I became friendly with her as well. And we kept getting paired with each other during theatre auditions because we were both short and dark looking. Though we never become close, Lauren always greeted me with a hug, and that was enough.

[livejournal.com profile] questioncurl - Since I didn't add Shalini to my friends list until well after the other stories were all written, hers is out of order. I think she should fall between Amy and Dave. Or maybe Jen and Amy. I'm not entirely sure since I don't remember the exact details of our introduction. I do know that I met her my junior year of college, Winter term 2001 to be more specific. I think we met through the library. We both worked there and I'm guessing we exchanged our first "hello" during a shift change. Then again...we may have met in class. Shalini, were you in my English Literature II class, taught by He Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken?

[livejournal.com profile] kmanatee - I met Krista Spring term 2002 after being cast in Mary Morales's production of Where the Wild Things Are. She was the stage manager and I remember thinking she looked like a wicked mean bitch the first time I set eyes on her in rehearsal. She had a loud voice which she used for issuing commands, laying down the law, and all that other stage managerly stuff. She was also tall which translated into imposing to little 5'3 me. But once she started hanging out backstage and joking around with the cast I discovered she was a first class sweetheart. She would play with my hair and sometimes help me tease it out for show. And once we became friendly enough to greet each other with hugs I found that my face came right up to her ample cleavage. She was most accomodating in letting me rest my little head right between her bosoms when I was feeling naughty.

Since I think this post has gone on long enough I will save the final five for another time :-)

Hmmm, I seem to remember knowing you long before that -- I don't remember the exact details, but I know the first time I met you, I admired your voice -- I think you had just sung or recited something at an open mic. We were in the Gizmo and there were a lot of choir people about. Maybe Dan Tyx introduced us?

Hmmm, it couldn't have been Dan Tyx just because I didn't know him. I mean, I knew who he was but I don't think I was ever introduced to him or ever had a conversation of any kind with him.

I'm willing to admit we may have met before Winter 2002. I had a really hard time pinning down the exact time frame, and I know that I definitely knew you by then so that was the date I put down.

Voices, voices, let's see, I didn't participate in a single open mic of any kind after my sophomore year (99-00 school year) because that's when the teachers and various Catch people finally erroded my confidence in myself as a writer and I thought I'd only be embarrassing myself by reading my work in public.

So...since you did enter in '99 it is possible that we met that year and I'm just an idiot who doesn't remember. *gasps* Maybe it was at the poetry slam in Wallace lounge judged by the teachers? That was the last open mic I participated in and it was during the '99-00 year. I remember I wasn't even going to participate but Gayle really wanted to read something, but she was really scared and asked me and Heather if we'd read too so she wouldn't be the only one doing it. So, we did. And I remember reading and getting very little applause and taking that as my cue that I should never do anything like that again. I think Ross Kelly wound up winning the slam. Even if that wasn't it, wow, I haven't thought about that...since it happened!
