The Six Year College Degree

It took me five years to graduate from college. It took Michael eight. I have a friend from junior high who started college in 1997 and still hasn't graduated. Many of my closest friends at Knox took over 4 years to graduate. To this day I often tell younger friends who are stressed out over their grades and performance that nobody actually graduates from college in four years. And now there's proof.

I know, I know. I am well acquainted with lots of people, entire classes even, that graduated in 4 years. But, if I look at the people who I am closest to, the individuals I hung out with in high school and spent the most time with at college, a good 75% took more than 4 years to graduate. Usually, when I say nobody graduates in four years, I mean none of the people I know really well graduated in four years.

I knew the percentage of students taking than four years to graduate increased during the time I was in school. I didn't suspect those students were in the majority now. It makes sense though. With rising tuition, less financial aid, having to work, trying to satisfy distribution requirements, not knowing how to balance studying and partying, I can't say I'm entirely surprised.
