Had a bit of a scare this morning. As usual, I took a cab to campus this morning. Took out my wallet, paid the driver, got out of the car, walked to the Pub, selected some food items for breakfast and lunch, went up to the cash register, and realized I no longer had my wallet. Gasp, horror, terror. I returned the food, ran outside, and immediately called the Bronxville Cab dispatch, telling the woman who answered that I think I left my wallet in the cab that just dropped me off. She was very polite, asked me to call back in 10 minutes after she'd had time to get a hold of the driver. Fine. I went across to Swinford, told Michelle of my plight, and spent a tense ten minutes reliving the events of September 2002, the first time my wallet evaporated and all the trouble I had to go through to get all my ID replaced. I most certainly did not want to go through that again.

When I finally called the dispatcher back she told me the driver hadn't found it in his cab even though he'd pulled over and taken a thorough look. I thanked her, hung up, and promptly started crying. All I could think of was how I was gonna have to take tomorrow off from work to go argue with the DMV, and how awful that would be considering how much time I've already taken off from work, and how I was going to have to take at least two days off this week anyway so I can go get my cervix sliced up. Just what I need after two months of continous doctors visits and one trip to the ER.

Michelle and Rosemary immediately pulled me outside and insisted we retrace my steps. I started toward the Pub while they investigated Mead Way. Half way up the driveway I heard Rosemary yell my name. I went bounding toward her. She was standing next to one of the landscaping trucks, inside of which sat a smiling man holding my wallet. He had found it on the ground a few moments earlier and had been driving up the block trying to see if there was anyone feverishly looking for a lost wallet. We thanked him, I stopped crying, I thanked the ladies who kindly advised me to quit carrying my social security card in my wallet, and then I went back to the Pub and got food.

I'm SOOOOO relieved it was found, but I really didn't need a shot of adreneline that early in the morning.

On a calmer note, I don't think I mentioned it, last week after a six month absence I ran into Sal, the really nice Bronxville cab driver who flirted with me and gave me free rides all through January. Saw him at the depot when I got off the train one morning. He came right up to me and said "Hey, Carla!" Turns out he was on a seasonal truck driving job for the past several months. Said he only drive the cab when there was nothing else on the horizon. Anyway, we talked, and he walked me to my cab, and opened the door for me, and all the other drivers were razzing him, but it was nice.

Okay, I'm gonna go take a chill pill or twelve and continue on to my regularly scheduled work day.
