I haven't given out the New Yorker(s) of the Month award in a while, mainly because it's not often that I stumble upon strangers worthy of the honor. But I got me three of 'em this morning!

I was on the BX28 bus on my way to work this morning and sitting across from me were these three high school aged guys. They were honing their rhyming skills on the way to school. They were all dressed in typical hip-hop chic, baggy pants, sneakers, etc. except they were all wearing "vintage" (as in they look like they could have been made in the 70's or 80's but were actually manufactioned in a clothing outlet last week) pop culture T-shirts. One had a Rolling Stones shirt, one was wearing a Trix cereal shirt, and one was wearing a Journey shirt. JOURNEY!!! Not even the people who actually listened to Journey when they were popular dare to step out in public in one of their concert tees, with or without irony! I was so tickled by the mix of pop culture sartorial cues I wanted to hug these kids!

And for that, these stylishly sassy young men get the New Yorker(s) of the Month Award for September 2006.

When I was 15 I volunteered at a local elementary school and tutored fourth graders. I usually met with my cute as a button 8 year old student in the empty cafeteria where we could often hear the faint sound of the radio the kitchen workers listened to. One day "Borderline" came on, and I paused for a moment to exclaim, "Oh, I LOVE Madonna!" The listened for a moment, then looked up at me and asked "Who's Madonna?" That's when I knew I was old.
