There's already a big Valentine's Day display in the SLC bookstore. They have long stemmed Dove chocolate roses that look really yummy. Maybe I'll buy one for myself since I don't typically fair very well when it comes to Valentine's Day gifts. In 2000 my boyfriend of two years sent me a card. In 2004 Other Mike sent me a small white teddy bear and some baby roses, by far the most extravagent Valentine's day gift I've ever gotten.

And since I'm on the topic, I might as well make the announcement I make every year around this time: For anyone considering buying me a present for Singles Awareness Day this year, all I want is EXPENSIVE JEWELRY!!! Thank you.

Sal never called me, and that's too bad because I think he would have had a good time if we'd gone out for coffee or something.

I've been taking Yasmin for almost two weeks now and the side-effects are getting to me. Mild persistent cramping, loss of appetite, and the overwhelming desire to cry over everything, including insurence commericals. If they don't clear up I may ask my doctor to put me on a different pill.

hey, i randomly found your journal by looking at other people in the sarahlawrence group (i am incredibly bored at work) but wanted to let you know, about yasmin--i started taking it last summer, and it was AWFUL. for about three months i was like a little black raincloud. cried at everything, was no fun to be around, etc. i didn't switch it because i didn't want to be on birth control in the first place becuase of the hormones, so i figured i might as well not mess with the hormones anymore. at this point i'm completely fine, but if you're not okay with sticking it out for what might be a couple months, you should find out if you can switch. :)

Thanks for the advice. I didn't want to be on birth control either but my doctor suspects I might have PCOS so she put me on Yasmin to regulate my menstrual cycle. I was hoping the pill would relieve the constant PMS symtoms I was experiencing during the months when my period never showed up, but....it hasn't. I still feel like I'm PMSing all day everyday. I definitely need to schedule a follow up visit to tell her what's going on.

Know what's weird? I only started crying about insurance commercials *after* I had to stop taking the pill thanks to a lack of health insurance.

It may be screwy hormones or it may be the reminder that I can't afford insurance right now. I'm not sure :)

Don't get too down over the pill thing, I ended up trying five different types of pill before I finally got one that didn't give me bad side effects of one sort or another. There are so many brands out there, it's just a matter of finding which one works exactly right for your body. And there's nothing wrong with going for two weeks and saying "Holy cow, this medicine makes me feel like shit." If your doctor wants you to stick it out, tell them to stuff it. Not that I have strong feelings about that or anything. =)

If you want a community to discuss the nitty-gritty of pills and PCOS, pcossupport is a pretty good group with a lot of well-informed people on it. Just one TMI question, did your doctor put you on a run of Provera before starting you on the pills? Provera makes you get your period like whoa, it's a way to jump-start your cycle before starting pills. If you didn't get that, the Yasmin might not be enough to get your cycle going for real, and that's why you feel so PMSsy.

Provera? Never even heard of it. Here's my pill taking timeline as it has shaped up. In September, I missed a period. In October I had a normal period, went to the doctor to make sure all was well, she put forth the PCOS hypothesis, ordered a load of tests, and wrote me a perscription for Yasmin with the direction that I begin taking it on the Sunday after my next period. Then I didn't have a period during November or December. For those two months I suffer extreme fatigue, irritability, and powerful cramping. Slightly differnt symtoms, same PMS 24/7 feeling. First week of January I had a nice normal period and started taking the pill January 8th. I need to schedule a follow up visit with my doctor anyway since I still don't have the results of any of the tests she ordered. I know it can take a while to find the right pill and I'm fine with that I'm just still pissed at my body for being so outta whack.

I understand the feeling exactly. If you don't have a period this month, I would definitely suggest talking with your doctor about Provera. The fewer periods you miss the better in terms of PCOS. Did you get an ultrasound done as part of your tests?

I'm going to. I have to admit, I'm dragging my feet on that one because I had to miss several days of work to go have blood tests and my glucose test done, and combined with normal sick days I don't think I have the time to take another day off from work. But I'm gonna have to anyway when I go see the doctor lady again so I might as well get on it.

It's a good idea. The ultrasound is no fun, but it'll hopefully give you a more definitive diagnosis, and may help explain the heavy cramps. I got mine done in the morning before work one day, it doesn't take very long.
