  1. bisexuality:
Well...I'm bisexual. I generally enjoy the company of other bisexual people. I like reading dry theoretical texts about bisexuality. I like hearing what people have to say about bisexuality and arguing with those who don't view it as a valid saexual identity. (These are the same schmucks who scowl when you imply that asexual and celibate are also valid sexual identities.)
  2. crime drama:
Oooh boy, I love Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, Law & Order:Criminal Intent, Court TV, Forensic Files, any show featuring a serial killer, either real or fictitious, and lots of dead boddies. Mmm mmm that's good television. Crime fascinates me and I have a romantic dream of becoming a homicide detective one of these days *sigh*
  3. flannel:
This is actually a former interest. I should probably take it off the list. Throughout high school and most of college I was a flannel freak. I had a closet full of old worn out flannel shirts that I'd wear all winter long. They were thread bare, coming apart at the seams but I wore em anyway. Having come of age during the grunge era flannel was the epitome of cool in my eyes. I don't have much anymore though. Once I entered the working world they were no longer appropriate everyday attire.
  4. jerry orbach:
Let's engage in some deductive reasoning shall we? We have already established that I like Law & Order. So, since Jerry Orbach was a regular on the show forever and played Lennie Briscoe my favorite chracter naturally I'm interested in him as well.
  5. maggie estep:
NYC based novelist, essayist, and spoken word poet who came to prominence in the early ninties when she was featured in a series of MTV spots. She single handedly turned me on to poetry. Before I saw her perform I thought poetry was a stuffy rule based medium that was the poorest of creative outlets. But when I saw what she and poets like Reg E. Gaines and Kevin Powell were doing with poetry, how they made it into this glorious sort of perfomance art I decided to give it a shot. Maggie has pretty much quit writing poetry and having been underwhelmed by her last novel I don't read her very much anymore. Still, I like to keep an eye on what she's up to.
  6. new york:
My hometown, my place of residence, the only place on this planet where I feel completely at ease. It's in my final instructions that I be buried here. I can't imagine residing anywhere else even in death. So, since I have a long history and even longer future with this place I like to stay abreast of the current events surrounding it.
  7. pseudoscience:
It's pure bullshit which is what makes it so fun! I love arguing with people who use nonfalsifiable "evidence" to back up a point. There's no way to convince them they're wrong, the goal of such interactions is to goad them into expelling as much hilarious unfounded fairytale information as possible so you can laugh at them as they do. The poeple who buy into pseudoscienctific theories are usually so totally sold on their validity that it's interesting to see why they hold so tighly to their beliefs. Seeing what it accomplishes or provides them with.
  8. religion:
I may be an atheist but I LOVE religion. I think it's a great thing. Scores upon scores of creation mythologies steeped in symbolism spelling out how to live and and act in the world. Fabulous! Systems that impose meaning upon existence. Outstanding! Structures that provide our egos with the promise that it won't cease to exist upon death. Fucking A! Religion and the reasons humans created it are as complex and varied as the number of religions we can choose from. I like what religions tell us about ourselves.
  9. ssri:
SSRI stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, Celexa, all the most popular anti-depressants are SSRI's. And since I require this medication in order to function I like to stay informed as to the side effects, studies, and long term effects of these drugs.
  10. walter kirn:
One of my favorite authors. He's a regular contributer to the New York Times Magazine and the movie base don his book "Thumbsucker" is in theatres now. Guess who's going to drag her brother to see it?

I miss the trendiness of flannel sometimes-- not because I think it looks cool, but because it's ridiculously comfy. I wore out all of my (and my dad's) flannel shirts ages ago, but I still get excited when it's the time of year where I have to put my flannel sheets on the bed.

Also, I'm fascinated by religion, too. If you haven't read it already, I definitely recommend A History of God by Karen Armstrong. I thought a book about Western monotheism would be annoying and stupid, but no, it's actually really cool. And I want to be Karen Armstrong when I grow up, because damn, she's smart and well-spoken.
