Mo' Money Mo' Problems
Aug. 25th, 2005 01:53 pmI love that song. Contains one of the best samples in the history of rap if you ask me. I remember hating it when it first came out in 1997 simply because it was everywhere. I have a natural aversion to anything that gets played on the radio more than once every six hours. Wasn't until I returned home fall term of 1999 that I warmed up to it. That was the term after I flunked out of Knox and was taking classes at BMCC to boost my GPA and get myself readmitted. I was up late one night and MTV played the video at 3:00 AM and I just found myself grooving to it. The next day I couldn't get the song out of my head so I ran down to Tower and bought the single.
Music was really important to me that term. It kept me motivated. A brief list of songs that kept me afloat that term:
Mo' Money Mo' Problems - Notorious B.I.G.
A Rose is Still a Rose - Aretha Franklin
Learn to Fly - Foo Fighters
The Great Beyond - REM
One Man Army - Our Lady Peace
For You - Tracy Chapman
Pretty Good Year -Tori Amos
Prayer Wheel - Eddi Reader
Strange Thing (Walking in my Blue Jeans) - Sophie B. Hawkins
No Connection - Sophie B. Hawkins
Spacedog - Tori Amos
Bliss - Tori Amos
Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Black Balloon - Goo Goo Dolls
Hangin' Around - Counting Crows
Cocoon - Joydrop
Dolphin's Cry - Live
Try Again - Aaliyah
I know there are more I just can't think of them right now. I'll add to the list when I get home and have a look through my CD collection. I made a tape for
risaypaz with most of these songs on it. I called it "Hope or How Carla Got Her Groove Back." I'll have to give her a call and ask her what other songs are on it.
As you may or may not be able to tell from that long ass aside, I'm trying not to freak out. Why? Because I may not be able to take a class this term all because no one can give me a straight answer about what steps I need to take in order to register. I've been at this for almost two weeks, registration is Monday and I still don't know what I need to do. It's all turning out to be way more complicated then I imagined.
We all know I went to the Registrar's office last week and spoke to that lady who didn't do anything but confuse me. She told me to contact the head of the Graduate Studies department. I emailed her last week, never got a response. So yesterday I emailed the actual Registrar, he told me to contact the Assistant Director of the Graduate Writing Program to see if there were any classes that weren't full yet, and the Administrative Asistant over at the Center of Continuing Education. I emailed the Asistant Director, Alex, yesterday and she was very sweet to me. She said they don't usually let nonmatriculated students take graduate classes but she'd see what she could do. The only openning they have is in a beginning craft class which is fine with me. I'm planning on getting in touch with CCE today, but I'm not feeling particularly optimistic about the information I'll receieve. Again, you ask why? Well because after doing some more investigating I learned:
A) Staff members who haven't applied and been accepted into a specific graduate program can only take classes through CCE.
B) Once must apply and be accepted into CCE same as any other post-bacc program.
C) CCE students can only take undergraduate classes. Graduate classes are not open to them.
Now, I always intended to apply and get accepted into the MFA writing program. I know my writing is strong enough to get me in, and I know I can explain away my shitty grades. The only base I don't have covered are recommendations. I know Dean Bailey would write one for me in a heartbeat, but I have no clue where I would get a second one. What I wanted to do was take a few classes this year, get friendly with the writing staff, then ask one of them to write my second recommendation. Obviously if I can't take graduate classes I can't make my plan work. I could take a couple undergraduate writing classes but that seems a waste of time for two reasons: 1) I've checked out the undergrad course offerings, there is nothing that even remotely appeals to me. All the writing classes are way too basic, I am far beyond most of them. And 2) if I'm gonna have to apply to get into CCE anyway I'd rather just hold off and put together a REAL graduate application. Alex said she'd be happy to give me a hand if I wanted to.
Maybe there is some way around all the red tape, but I'm not optimistic. I was really hoping to take a class this term and all the information in the employee handbook made it seem really easy. One way or the other I'll contact CCE today, see what their AA can tell me and then make a decision. *sigh* I would really love it if something in higher education could be simple for once.
In other news, I was supposed to go see the play my brother is doing at the Fringe Festival this Friday but I'm not gonna be able to. The show starts at 5:00 which is the same time I get out of work. Them's the breaks. I told him I'd make it to the next one.
Princeton Review released their 2006 rankings yesterday and I am happy to announce that WVKC was rated the 8th best college radio station in the country, woo hoo! Knox was also rated 3rd in the "Students happiest with financial aid" category, 12 on the "Professors get high marks" list, outscoring SLC by three points, and 20 on the "Class discusions encouraged" list, (though SLC outscored us there by coming in at # 4.) All in all not bad. Not bad at all.
Later, 2:08 PM: My fears have just been confirmed. Just got an email from CCE confirming all the shit I just detailed in this entry. To even take a class through CCE one must go through an application process identical to the graduate admissions process. What bullshit! Now I have to start seriously putting together an MFA application. Great. I wasn't planning on doing that till next year, but if I even wanna be able to take classes NEXT year I need to get my application in by the February deadline. What fucking fuckity fucked up greatness. Now I can upgrade my mood icon from "irritated" to "pissed off."
