Lovesongs for Underdogs
Apr. 2nd, 2005 02:54 pmIn an attempt to quit thinking, talking, and writing about death I'm returning to the task I laid out for myself a few days ago, to tell the stories of how I met all the people on my friends list. As you can see, none of the recollections in this entry are as epic as those of the last. I'll tell you right now, those first four were the exeption to the rule. Most of my how we met stories are gonna look more like the ones you see here.
prettypurplebrd - I met Ariel in January of 2000 in Mary Burgland's Learning Mathematics class. For those of you unfamiliar with this course it's the one "remedial" math class at Knox. The one that comes before Fun for Mentals. (Consequently, even after taking this class I failed Fundamentals twice before finally passing with a D my final trimester.) As we all know, I'm a stickler for punctuality. I always have to be early or exactly on time for my commitments. True to form I usually made it to class 10 minutes before everyone else, and Ariel was always there. She sat directly behind me, and one day she started asking me how I found the previous night's homework assignment. That's how it started, and from there we began conversing before class every morning, and sitting with each other in the cafeteria on occasion. It was one of the few truly normal and organic friendships I've managed to cultivate.
mistressfox - I had to go poking through Jennie O's LJ archives in order to figure out if I met her in January of 2000 or 2001. I can't remember if she entered Knox during the 99-00 or the 01-02 school year. I want to say 99-00 because my earliest memories of ASK (Alternative Spiritualities Klub, the brain child of Heather Frankland, Becky Kuglitsch, and Sean Bulthaup.) include her and ASK was founded my sophomore year. But...Heather was studying abroad first term of the 01-02 year so it was my duty to keep her posted on how things were going with ASK, what kind of turn out we were getting, that sort of thing. I remember telling her there was this really enthusiastic girl named Jennie who'd become a regular at the meetings, and who she would have to be sure to befriend upon her return. So, yeah, bottom line, I can't remember when the hell I met Jennie O. I just rememeber commiserating over the fact we were two of the only "out" pagans at Knox.
dpsycho - Like so many people on my friends list I knew of Chris long before I was officially introduced to him. He started at Knox the same year I did. I knew he lived directly across the quad from me. Thanks to Faces and the Knox Student Directory (the two best stalking tools in the history of the world), I knew he was Dan Hegedus's roomate. I knew he was cute and briefly harbored a little crush-from-afar on him before he started dating Gemma. I'd heard he was an animal in the sack, he was one of the few drop dead hilarious individuals in the improv troop, he was a person I really wanted the opportunity to know.
That opportunity didn't come until over a year and a half later in the Spring of 2000. Heather Frankland and I had gone to some theatrical event in Studio Theater...maybe improv, maybe a one act, I don't remember. The chairs were set up on risers as usual, and she and I were just chillin in the front row when Chris and Dan came in and began talking to her. She quickly introduced all of us, and....I don't remember what exactly was said but Chris made some comment about being taller than me, to which I replied "no you're not" and stood up on one of the seats on the first riser. Not to be outdone, Chris and Dan simultaneously stepped onto a couple of chairs on the second riser and looked down at me in glee. That was the first interaction I ever had with him.
electra310 - Cori and I met at the joint Haiku/Cowboy Mouth audition in September of 2000. Apparently she and Gayle had gone to the same high school. At the audition they conversed a bit and Gayle assured me she was good people. What I remember most vividly is reading the first scene of Haiku with Cori playing the part of Lulu (that eventually went to Jennie Kepp) and me playing Nell, the role Cori was eventually cast in. I really liked the part of Nell and hoped I'd get it. But I knew Cori was a shew in. She had a very motherly way about her, she was the natural choice. I got cast as Billie, the one chracter whose motivation I could not figure out to save my life! While I wasn't pleased with my role, I met a lot of cool people through that show: Cori, Jennie Kepp, and I got to spend more time with Mary Morales and Agnes.
ninquark - Met Wesley at the same batch of auditions where I met Cori. He was one of maybe five guys who'd come out to audition for the lead in Cowboy Mouth, as such he got to read with just about every girl in the room, myself included. After being matched up we trudged up to the lobby of CFA, made our brief introductions, and rehearsed the scene a couple times. I couldn't really get into it. No one could actually. Wes read the same scene with every actress in the room and no one nailed it. Maybe it was because that particular scene, taken out of context, was just difficult to play. Or maybe it was because most of us were focusing more on Wesley's pretty brown eyes then the text. Whatever the cause, when he finally got around to reading with Mary Morales, psh, the auditions might as well have ended right there and then. Their reading was fab. They had chemistry! Mary flirted her way through the scene, Wes flirted back, and you could see every heterosexual woman in the room deflate. In the course of that one hour we'd all developed a crush on Wes, and we were jealous that we didn't have such effortles repore with him. I can't speak for anyone else but my crush on Wes has yet to dissipate.
Okay I have to stop here because the next person in line is gonna require an epic.
Tune in next week for: Gemma!
