Me and the Lovely
Mar. 19th, 2005 01:31 amI've had the most delightful evening. Tonight mother and I scurried over to the east side to see the internationally renowned Knox College Choir perform at St. Joseph's Church. We got there nice and early, and true to my word I had us seated front and center so I could grin at everyone.
ninquark was the first person I spoke to as the choir members began filtering in. I tried to control my enthusiasm, I was so thrilled to see a familiar Knox face. We hugged, and he sat down and talked to mom and I for a couple minutes. Next,
leopardqueen came in. More hugging, more talking. Also spoke to Kira Horel briefly.
The concert itself was great, no surprise there. The Knox Choir is always outstanding. The Chamber Singers did this incredibly fun rendition of the overture to the Barber of Seville. My mom was humming along through the whole thing. She REALLY liked the show. She was very impressed. In my case, it was just really great to watch a choir concert again. I missed them. Before the show I was telling mom how choir concerts are usually held at the end of the term, so they're a great incentive to take a break from whatever final you're working on. Told her how we used to round up a whole slew of people to go see them, and then grab dinner at the Gizmo afterwards.
I surprised myself by remembering the first verse of the Knox Hymn. There were tons of alums who went up to sing at the end, many of whom I didn't even know were living in New York, like Mara Mindell, Helen Scharber, and Kristin Miserocchi.
By the end of the show there was only one person I hadn't spoken to:
irishelf. As the after show mingling began I scanned the crowd for her face, and instead found
daver40's. I hadn't been able to get a hold of him before the concert because I'm a lazy and harried friend. I didn't think he'd show up. I was certainly glad to see him though, it's been quite a while since we've been able to hang out. We have totally conflicting schedules, so even finding a convenient time to talk on the phone is a hassle.
Chatted with Dave for a few minutes, and then resolved to put my hands on Heather if it was the last thing I did! Lucky for me I spotted her across the church, and as I made my way over to her she called out "Carla!" and held her arms out to me. She gave me a great big hug that made me feel all speshul in the incorrect spelling of the word. She introduced me to her SAI pledge daughter and told me all about what they would be doing during their visit, and what troubles they'd had boarding the plane this morning. Marisa wandered over and supplemented the story. I introduced them to my mom. I love introducing Knox people to my family because my Knox life and my New York life are such distinct and separate things I like being able to bring them together. It makes me feel a little more...I want to say...cohesive. It makes me feel as though all my experiences have lined up somewhere outside of myself, ya know?
Before we headed out I gave Marisa and Heather my cell number and told them to call me if they should have a little free time. I really hope they do cause I would LOVE to see them again before they leave the city.
Dave decided to take the cross town bus with me and my mom so we got a little extra time to chat. When we reached Broadway I asked if he'd like to join me for a bite to eat. I took him over to City Diner which is basically the NYIT version of the Broadview. We ate, we talked, we paid the bill, we went home.
Very good night. I really can't tell you how wonderful it was to see everyone, even for such a brief period. I haven't seen Wes, Heather, or Marisa in two years. Two years! They are the last of the people I know at Knox. Once they graduate I won't have anymore friends on campus. Makes me feel kinda old. But it also makes them special, because they are my last link to the Knox world and when they're gone, so am I. I still long for those days back in the dorms, having all my friends in one building, availible to me 24/7. This is definitely one of those "I wish I could go back to college" nights. But not in a depressing way. More in a nostalgic, remembering the good times, sort of way :-)
