A Simple Kind of Life
Oct. 28th, 2004 05:51 pmLast night I used the Barnes and Noble gift card
nabuchodonosor sent me :-D Spent a little more money then I was expecting to on bn.com, but it was all on material I've had my eye on for a while. I bought a new copy of Marcus Cafagna's "Roman Fever." I've been trying to find a copy for over a year but, as far as poetry collections go, it's fairly old so most stores don't have it in stock. I fell in love with Marcus Cafagna senior year of college when I wrote a critical paper about "Roman Fever" for Poetry Workshop. I stumbled across that paper(which I got a B on) about this time last year. I re-read it. With three years of distance I can see why I got a B on it. The prose are clunky and I don't do a very good job of explaining or defending my point. I'm too general in my analysis. Bu tthe thesis itse;f is really quite strong. It might actually be a pretty good piece of literary criticism if I just cleaned up the paragraphs. For some bizarre reason I really want to do that, make that mediorce paper into something intellectual and academic. Silly I know, but it might be a fun little pet project.
I also purchased a hardcover copy of "The Noonday Demon" on sale for 5 bucks! All in all that's a really great reference book, and while I would never buy it at full price, it's definitely worth five dollars. Also bought a used copy of "Women, Passion, and Celibacy" by Sally Cline. It's a book I read while in high school about why some women choose not to have sex, and discusses the idea of celibacy being considered a specific sexual orientation. It was a really interesting read, and written from a feminist stand point so there was none of that "you should be celibate for God" crap (even though there is a chapter about nuns. Can't discuss women and celibacy without talking about nuns :-D)I always wanted to get my own copy, but the book is long out of print. Lucky me, found a copy on bn.com for 2.79!!! figured it would be a nice text to revisit having just finished "Intercourse," (which, by the way, was absolutely stellar! I'm so glad I decided to try reading it again because I definitely wasn't mature enough to get it the first time around.)
Monica AND Brook dropped in on me today which was a nice surprise. We loafed around the work room for an hour discussing babies, boys, scars, and reading excerpts aloud from "My Life" by Bill Clinton. The work room is a great place to socialize cause it's sound proof, so we can screech and scream and laugh as loud as we want and we don't disturb anyone. Monica came by yesterday too. I love it when she's around cause she makes me feel like a student again! She walked me out of the library when I went for lunch yesterday, and as we crossed the floor, bookbags in hand, trying not to giggle too loudly, it felt like I was back in school, like I was just a regular ole college student hanging out with her friend. it was nice.
And I managed to catch the eclipse on my way home last night. When I came out of the subway at 86th the moon was almost completely in shadow. I called my mom from a payphone and told her she should come down and watch it with me. She did. We stood outside our building until the face was totally covered. It was fun.
I lead a simple life.
