Guess what I got yesterday? A letter from the one and only, accept no substitues, best hugger in all the land, Norman Golar!!! I was so surprised and happy. I was thinking he'd forgotten about me. But no no no, he hasn't, he's just been busy. Apparently he's on a letter writing kick right now and I was one of the poeple on his "to write" list. Not only did he include two new poems, but he also sprayed all four pages with his cologne. He must have used a lot cause now my entire house smells like Norman. Not that that's a bad thing. Norman always smelled nice. Whenever he'd get me in one of his full body hugs I'd just inhale his scent. It was always nice to be totally consumed by Norman.

The poems he sent are really spectacular. He must be soaking up the knowledge at the University of Alabama. His poetry has grown by leaps and bounds, no wonder he keeps getting published in online lit mags. That boy has got a bright future in front of him. He's doing some really great work with forms. One of the poems, "G.H.E.T.T.O." is composed of ten six line stanzas that all spell the word ghetto when read vertically. It is so hard to write a poem like that well, but Norman did it. None of the lines sound forced, he keeps a consistant tone and voice throughout, and his imagery is great because this is Norm we are talking about afterall. He is so exceptional.

Hey, has anyone heard the new Sarah Mclachlan album yet? I'm still trying to decide whether or not I want to buy it. I've loved all of her albums but she kinda lost me with Surfacing and Lilith Fair. Not that Surfacing isn't a good album...it is!!! But one of the things I've always liked about Sarah is that she maintains a consistant voice in her song writing while simultaneously experimenting with new sounds. And she DID try new stuff on Surfacing, but she also blew up with that album, and I noticed as Lilith Fair got all popular, she started sticking to a formula, that ethereal sad broken hearted song formula. Her latest single "Fallen" is a prime example of why I'm afraid to buy the album. It sounds so generically Sarah Mclachlan. It sounds like someone else trying to sing and write like Sarah. If the whole album sounds like that than I have no interest in it.

Not to mention the fact that I find it difficult to respect anyone who gets naked in their videos even if it is for "spiritual" purposes. Oh fucking please!!! You get naked in a video because you have a nice body and sex sells not because it's "freeing" or "cleasing." People walk around their apartments nude because it's freeing, not strip in front of strangers. I flet the same way when Alanis got nekkid in the video for "Thank U." She made such a big deal out of it, saying how scared she was but that she had to do it for herself, and I was just like "Shut the fuck up! You have a great bod THAT'S why you took your clothes off you lying dipshit!!!" No one who was self conscious about their body would ever get naked in a music video. For once I would like to see a nice big hulking roll filled woman get naked in a music video for other than comical purposes. Don't think it'll ever happen, but still, I can hope.

Norman! Eee!

. . . I should start getting in touch with people now that I have so much time . . .

. . . I hate to be a prick, dear, but I lost Christopher's contact information, along with everyone else's. But do you still have his e-mail addresses?

I kinda feel the same way about Sarah McLachlan. I first discovered her when I was 11, a good three years before she got famous-- and at the time, she just exploded my assumptions of what made good music, and proved to me that a lot of the best music being made wasn't getting any airplay on the radio. And then Lilith Fair happened, and Surfacing, and I bought that CD out of loyalty to her music, but frankly, I didn't like it because it was unsettlingly radio-friendly, and that she had settled for boring middle-of-the-road adult contemporary pop rather than the incredible music she used to make. I still consider getting her new CD, just because I own all her other CDs anyway, but what little glimpses of her new single I hear (I've never really listened that closely to it, because I don't have a TV and am blissfully unaware of pop culture as it currently stands) sound disturbingly radio-oriented, as well.

The nakedness in the video doesn't really bother me, though. She did a video 12 years ago (the song "Into the Fire") where she was naked and covered with mud, so it's not like she's breaking any new personal ground with it. Besides, she's hot. (^_^)

I've never seen the video for Into the Fire. I thought this was her first foray into on screen nudity. Like you I feel sort of obligated to buy the new album out of pure loyalty but.....I make it a point never to buy an album until I've heard at very least three good songs off of it. I somehow doubt the new album will meet my standards.

I remember Norman...

We worked together in Admission's Suite. He is an awesome guy.

Mary used to have conversations with him in Iambic Pentameter.

And I have a really funny and embarrassing story about one night he was unable to sleep soundly because of the noise in my room. Perhaps I should leave that story out of this post. ;)

Added Note...
