Minor Tragedies
Jan. 15th, 2004 05:20 pmAt some point this extraordinarily windy morning a pipe of some description burst in the boiler or furnace or whatever, of my apartment building, thus terminating all heat and hot water in the entire structure. We've been told the heat won't be back up till tomorrow. This is very bad. Temperature is dropping down to 0 tonight with a wind chill of -25 in some places. Anyone staying in our building over night may very well freeze to death. So my apartment has been rendered uninhabitable on the coldest night of the season thus far. Thanks alot Weinreb Mangement, you fuckers.
So Me, Mom, and Laura are all vacating for the night. Laura was planning on going to visit her family in Pennsylvania this wekend, so she's just decided to leave a day earlier. Mom is staying over at Joan's, and I'm going to spend the night at Mike and Danielle's. Not that there is anything wrong with Mike and Danielle, but I just really don't want to stay with them. They live in a studio, they go to bed early, and I'm a relentless insomniac, particularly on Thursdays when I don't have to go to work the next day. I'm not gonna be able to stay up and read, or play on the computer or write poetry. When they turn in, I'll have to turn in, and just lay awake in bed until 4 or 5 in the morning. Beauty ay? But they're saving me from frost bite so I should probably just shut up and count my blessings.
I've seen two baby mice here at work today. One in the bathroom, and one right here at the circ desk. They're so cute. I like watching them run around scrounging for food. I don't understand why so many people are afraid of mice. they're so adorable. Spiders too.
Spoke to Other Mike for two hours last night. As usual he did his Mike THING and made me feel better about myself than I had been. Too bad I'm not gonna get to speak to him tonight. I could use some more positive chit chatter.
Think I finally came across a book of short stories I can pass on to Sebastien: "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fight in Heaven," by Sherman Alexie. I didn't like it the first time I read it. Still don't really. But I was taking a look through it today and found a few decent stories he might be able to get into. After all he doens't need to read the whole damn book, just the stuff I mark off for him. So, yeah...I feel accomplished. Kinda.
PS Today Mary told me I was the most self-possessed person she'd ever met, (besides Sebastien of course :-p) I smiled and thanked her, but inside I was laughing like a hyena, and thinking "She don't know me very well, do she?"
