Up to page 109 and Elena has turned into Super Bitch.
1) She broke up with her boyfriend Matt so she could go after Stefan. (Matt, being a nice guy and all, befriended Stefan in the aftermath.)
2) Elena started a rumor about having a French boyfriend in order to make Stefan jealous and the rest of the school think she wasn't interested in Stefan. She did so without considering how much it would hurt Matt since the rumor indicated that she began seeing said French boyfriend while she was still dating Matt.
3) She enlisted Matt's help in trying to land Stefan even though she knew it hurt him to do so, but he's a nice guy who loves her so of course there was no way he'd say no.
4) When she found out Stefan had taken he ex-BFF to the Homecoming dance she pitched a mini-fit. Abandoning her friends and her date, she began laughing, and dancing, and flirting with every boy who crossed her path. This led to her leaving the dance with bad boy assholes Dick Carter and Tyler Smallwood (the humor of those names was lost on me as a pre-teen,)and Matt, Bonnie, and Meredith are left scrambling after her because she had recklessly put herself into yet another dnagerous situation that they were going to need to save her from.
Elena is such a moody, dismissive, bitch I don't understand how she has any friends at all. I don't know WHAT Matt sees in her, and I don't know why Bonnie sticks around. When Elena is in one of her moods she tends to take shit out on Bonnie. Plus, Elena and Meredith tend to tease her a lot.
I understand why Meredith likes Elena. They have a strong repore even if Elena is way more psycho. I can even understand why Stefan is so intrigued by Elena, we have backstory that explains that.
But, God, if Elena doesn't shape up soon I may have to remove her from the list of my favorite literary characters if all time.
I knew re-reading the series was a mistake. *grumbles*

Date: 2009-02-08 07:54 pm (UTC)What I'm wondering, however, is how you absorbed this all when you were first reading the books. In the earlier post, you said that you liked Elena because you wanted to be her, and identified with Meredith because, well, she's awesome like you. But what were you thinking about all of Elena's ultra-bitchy Matt-ruining behavior back in the day?

Date: 2009-02-09 07:00 pm (UTC)So, at the age of twelve, I'd already spent four years bearing the brunt of such bitchy behavior, so I was used to it and thought it was normal. Also, as I said before, at that age I was still figuring out who I was and what I respected. I hadn't yet figured out what I thought of that sort of behavior. At twenty-nine I know that I find that sort of behavior inexcusable, back then, I didn't.
