I've never told you about Whitney Verdejo. Whitney was my best friend in first grade. We met the first day of school when our teacher assigned us seats directly across from one another. We quickly became inseparable. She only lived a couple of blocks away from me so we were always having play dates.
About half way through the school year Whitney told me her family had decided to move to New Jersey at the end of the year. I was heart-broken. I remember visitng her apartment one last time right before summer and seeing the living room and dining room stuffed with boxes. As I left that day we promised to stay in touch, but we were seven, and writing letters and making long-distance phone calls weren't exactly our forte. I think we may have exchanged one letter after she left New York in 1986, but that was it.
Well, that was it until last night when I logged into MySpace and found a message from her in my inbox!
She asked if I was the same Carla she'd been best friends with in first grade. After I confirmed she told me she had been looking through an old photo album and found pictures of us together from her seventh birthday party. She thought of how much she missed me and decided to see if I maybe had a MySpace profile. She said she was so happy to have found me and I echoed the sentiment.
Truthfully, I knew she had a MySpace profile. I looked her up last year, but when I found her profile I was too afraid to message her. I didn't think she would remember me after twenty-two years. I was afraid she'd think I was some sort of weirdo for holding on to the memory of an elementary school friendship. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to know that she has cherished the memory of our friendship as much as I have.
She still lives in New Jersey and she sings in a band. Even better, she ikes all the same stuff I do! We like a lot of the same music, movies, and TV shows. I mean, she's 29 and actually admits to watching Degrassi: the Next Genration! Oh, I have so many questions to ask her and gossip to share. As soon as I'm done here I'm going to go write her a nice long email.
I've noticed that the expansion of online social networks happens in waves. I hadn't added a single contact to my MySpace or Facebook profile in almost three weeks until Whitney came along last night, and then WILL CULBERTSON suddenly popped up on Facebook this afternoon!
Again, I can't tell you how ecstatic I was to see him there. I have missed Will SO MUCH! He was one of my closest guy friends back in college and we just kind of let each other slip away after graduation, due I suspect in large part to all that stuff with the kissing and the weirdness. But even with all that I still adore Will. He was incredibly supportive of me throughout those tough Knox years, and there were days and weeks that I could not have gotten through without him. I wrote him a big long email at work, and then he wrote me a big long email back, and now I have to write another big long email in response! I am not going to let him lose touch with me ever EVER again.
PS
greenblackevil is awesome. He is made of honey and chives.
