I-CON

So, I-CON. We went, we saw, we kicked it's ass.

Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating. Maybe it kicked our asses a little more than we kicked it's. But, it was a fun excursion.

Greg and I arrived at Stonybrook University around noon and met up with his brother Doug shortly after. They were both appalled at the $43 entrance fee and made sure I knew that two years ado the price was only been $20. They made sure to remind me of that fact periodically throughout the day. I, on the other hand, was not surprised, seeing as the last convention I attended (a Socialist conference at BMCC back in 1998. Long story.) had charged about that much for one day.

We weren't there for the activities, seminars, or tournaments. We just went to people watch and browse the stalls. And I, of course, wanted Jamie Bamber's autograph. But, when all was said and done and we finally dragged our asses over to Greg's parent's house for dinner, the guys said that given our objectives, the con really wasn't worth the price of entry and they probably wouldn't go next year. I have to agree. It was enjoyable, but definitely not worth $43. Not for people like us who aren't really enmeshed in the culture.

Once we got in we headed straight for the sales floor where there was a stunning lack of BSG related wares. The stalls were pretty disappointing. A lot of them were selling the same stuff. There wasn't much variety. Though I did manage to find a diamond in the rough. At one of the many stalls that were selling Buffy action figures I found a Dark Witch Willow figure. I have been looking for this figure since the end of season 6. It is near impossible to find anywhere but the internet where she sells for stupid prices. But I got her for $20 and that was just fine by me. I also looked for a copy of the Buffy Season 8 comic but no one had it.

I was underwhelmed by most of the costumed participants. As we made our way through the crowd I began to think there was a joke to be teased out of the experience and it would have to begin with "How many Sailor Moons does it take...?" Those women not dressed as anime characters were in faux medieval garb. The only decently dressed girl I saw was the lone Starbuck who totally looked the part from her cropped blond hair, to her viper pilot uniform, to her authentic dog tags. The boys were only slightly more creative. There was a very convincing V walking around, and a couple of Ghostbusters who were carrying really wicked hand made proton packs. The rest were in, you guessed it, faux medieval garb. *yawn* Those that weren't in costume, my party included, were swathed in black from head to toe. Made me think I was at a goth convention.

So, we browsed, and Doug poked fun at people, and at 1:00 Greg and I went to stand in line to see Jamie Bamber. The line was fairly short, but slow moving. We were near the back so we had to wait for a full hour before we got to the head. Once there, Greg graciously held my coat as I handed the charming Mr. Bamber the glossy photo Greg bought me down on the sales floor for him to sign. He greeted me with a charming british lilt and I was pleased to see that even after an hour of autographs he was still warm and friendly and did not appear the least bit bored of put upon.

When I gave him my name he asked, "Karla? with a K?"

"No, with a C."

"Ah. Italian?"

"Yes, very Italian."

So he signed, and he took a picture with me, and he was totally nice, and Greg was a sport, and now have a signed picture of Jamie Bamber to go with my signed pictures of Scott Bakula and Bill Pullman.

After that we were pretty much done. I joked about attending the seminar on tentacle porn later in the evening, but we were all tired and I was full of hot air. So, we went back to their parents house where we ate dinner and Greg and I did our taxes. Afterwards we went to Friendly's for ice cream sundays. And as soon as we got to greg's apartment he crashed on the couch and fell fast asleep. I stayed up and watched two television shows about baby tigers on Animal Planet.

Overall, it was a good day. I got the autograph of an actor from a series I adore, I found an action figure I've been searching for for ages, I'm getting $100 back from the government this year. Not bad. Not bad at all.
