My Neighborhood
Nov. 7th, 2006 02:47 pmHere's what I've learned about my little Bronx neighborhood today on www.neighboroo.com :
Lifestyle: It is comprised mainly of families with a comfortable income, and young families of modest means. The median age is 39, 20% of residents are married with kids, and the average household income is $49,500.
Politics: It is a democratic stonghold with 84% of the population registered as such.
Crime: On a scale of 0-100 with 0 being the safest, my zip code has an overall crime index of 91. That's significantly higher than both the state and national average. Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't walk home from the subway after midnight anymore.
Elementary School: Of the 689 school districts in all of New York City, our district is rank 639th. That's fucking atrocious!
Air Quality: On a scale of 0-100 with 100 being perfectly pure breathable air, my zip code has an index of 24. No wonder I've got me some bad ass allergies and am sick all the time!
Housing: The average home price is $455,400. The average rent for a two bedroom apartment is $1,200 (a friggin STEAL by NYC standards.)The cost of living index is 144. National average is 100 so ours is considerably higher.
Work:The average one way commute is 47 minutes. That's about right. And our unemployment rate is 8%
Population: There are 26,363 people per square mile in my zip code. Whites are in the ethnic minority comprising only 27.99% of the population. (Just the way I like it!) Hispanics make up 19.4% which is above average in comparison to the percentage in most other areas. African-Americans are the majority making up 61.3 % of the neighborhood. And Asians make up 3.4% which is the same as the national average.
That was fun! I liked that. Now go find out about your neighborhood.
