And the NYCer of the month award goes to the ultra nice bus driver who gave me a free ride to the 2 train this morning after we discovered my Metrocard was empty.
These two made it worth my while to have gotten up an hour early :-)
Today was Opening Day at Sarah Lawrence, the day all the returning students registered for classes. Everyone has to help out on opening day so no one does their usualy job. My assignment was handing out registration packets to students. I got to the fine arts building around 8:30 and introduced myself to the rest of the registration team. It was me, two women from the registrar's office, and three graduate students. The flood gates openned at 9:00 and we were off.
Honestly, it was a whole lotta fun. I immediately positioned myself as our station's official meet and greeter. I called students over when they looked lost, gave them direction, asked them how they were doing, and engaged in idle chit chat. I handed out packets and learned people's names. I smiled and waved and tried to get them through the line as fast as possible. Most of the kids were cool, none were idiotic in the extreme. All the girls looked like boys and all the boys looked like they'd spent the summer trecking through the amazon. I was finally able to talk to Josh, the cute student aide who works in my office. After last night, it was good for me to have a day of nothing but person to person interaction. I liked being able to smile at people and see relief spread across their faces, like they were just SO happy to see a warm face. At the end of the day one of the owmen I'd been working with, Marian, complimented me saying she really appreciated my enthusiasm, thought I did a lot to help the process run smoothly, and was really impressed that I was able to make the whole ordeal so pleasant for the students.
That made me feel good.
I got off early and was in my apartment by 5:00. I proceeded to take a 4 hour nap which is why I'm awake right now.
All in all it was a good day. I wouldn't want to do it allt he time, but it was just what I needed. However I will be happy to retunr to my desk tomorrow because after standing for 7 hours straight my back is killing me.
