I come into work this morning and the first thing Seb tells me is that not only has the vice-president of the college decided not to give us a part-time evening circulation assitant to help out Don and I, but she has decided we're not going to fill the part-time reference librarian job left vacant by Mary Darden!!! Apparently this woman is all about the bottom line and the less money the school has to spend on the library, the better. Seb theorizes that they are moving toward self-check out and automation here in Manhattan simply so they can get rid of some of the staff. They think the library is just about providing access to information. If a machine can provide the access, then there's no reason to keep staff around. But anyone who has ever done research in an academic library knows it's not all just about access. It's about locating information, something many of our students need instruction on which is why we have so many reference librarians, to teach them where and how to find the information they need. One library training session during orientation doesn't usually cut it. Students often need one on one attention. Moreover there are a hundred little tasks that need taking care of everyday. Printer problems, copier jams, book cataloging, helping students find books on the shelves, computer problems, scanner problems, statistics sheets, overdue notices, lots of little things that require people and time. And while staff are taking care of these problems, they are not giving the students the help they need. The only way the library functions is by having enough staff to cover all the bases, a couple people helping students, a couple doing administrative work, a couple doing reference. If they keep cutting staff there will be no one to assist the students, and that's what the vice-president kind of wants. She wants the students to not need help. At all. Ever. I don't understand how this school thinks it'll draw more students in by raising tuition and cutting services. Students come back to a school year after year only if their educational needs are being met. When they aren't, the students go elsewhere. The students have a joke, they say "You know what NYIT really stands for? Next Year I Transfer." Very true.
I know we all bitched and moaned when Knox started closing the Gizmo at Midnight instead of two. I know we all cried in terror when they reduced library hours by *gasp* one whole hour. I know we griped when they took away our cleaning ladies. Jesus Christ, most schools don't even HAVE personal cleaning ladies!!! But at least Knox realized there was still a need for the services they were reducing and thus reduced them as little as possible. NYIT doesn't have the same sense. They pay no mind to what the students actually want and need. They haven't figured out that only by doing so will they attract more students and keep the ones they've already got.
And on a completely unrelated note: why is it when someone cancels plans or blows me off or just outright treats me like shit do I feel like there's something wrong with me? That I've done something to warrent the treatment? Why do I think I deserve that?
