Nice evening. Just like old times. Mom, Mike, and I lounging around the living room watching the Tonys. Assassins walked off with 5 awards. We were happy. Nice to see a real fucking musical win something.

Wanna know what's wrong with musicals these days? Lemme tell ya:

1) They no longer contain books!!! Rent? That piece of deplorable shit Jekell and Hyde? Just song after song after song. No scenes. No dialogue. Just singing. Darling that's not a musical that's a god damn opera!!! And I HATE opera!!! A good musical should contain SCENES that require ACTING, and songs should serve the purpose of giving voice to feelings, emotions, and thoughts the characters CANNOT express otherwise. It's in the musical theatre rule book ya chumps, and before ya go trying to break the mold you'd best acquaint yourself with it!!! Only then can the rules be successfully broken. Or better yet, forget about breaking rules and just take the time to WRITE A FUCKING BOOK!!!!!

2) The current trend is to write pop songs and pretend they make for interesting musical theatre. News flash: they don't. What's the point of writing a musical in which all the characters think and sound exactly the same during their songs? That's not theatre, that's a Britney Spears album. There should be some variety to the songs, and different characters should express themselves differently in song.

I was gonna write all about my dad and how his all emcompassing love of theatre led all his off spring into the profession in an attempt to understand the one thing that always ranked higher in importance than us. But I'm not feeling up to it anymore. Maybe later. And I was gonna write about Other Mike and how talking to him tonight made me feel all shiney and loved again, but I just wanna go chill with Brother Mike right now, so we'll cover all that tomorrow.
