Can anyone recommend a good mover?

The last time I moved several of my co-workers and friends of friends recommended Moishe's Moving, the company I ultimately went with, for their speed, care, and low prices. They charged me $500 total to move my crap from Manhattan to the Bronx which is a ridiculously good rate. Since I haven't accumulated any new furniture and don't expect to require any additional boxes, I was expecting to call Moishe's up and get the same or at least a fairly comparable rate on this move. Well, I just got off the phone with their rep. and he gave me a quote of $1500!!! I told him that his company had only made me pay 500 when I'd moved the exact same amount of stuff a longer distance just a little over a year ago. This didn't move him in any way. "Well, now it's $1500," he said. I told him I would be exploring other options.

I know if I can get anyone to move anything for under 1K I should consider myself lucky. Unfortunately, I really cannot afford anything more than that. If I can't find someone to move my stuff for under 1K I'm afraid I just won't be able to move. So, ask your friends, your family, any recommendations you can make would be greatly appreciated.

How about a 30 dollar rider truck, combined with 3 or more friends, to move things with you? They cost 30 dollars a day. you might need to take two trips.....or two days. But...it'd work. I figure you could move a majority of your stuff yourself, boxxed and such, and get help for the funiture in a seperate trip, after work/school/day off, when others are free.


Just an option.

How expensive was the furniture? Would it make sense to get rid of the furniture and just ship what you can via UPS?

Um...nooooo cause I use all of my furniture. I use my bed to sleep on, my bookcases to house my books, my computer desk to keep my computer on, etc. Plus, I got all of it second hand and none of it is under 6 years old. Yes, I got it all cheap, but they are all high quality items. I paid 100 dollars for my queen sized bed, 40 for my huge wooden dresser, got my desk chair for free. Basically I got all my furniture at the cheapest possible prices from friends of mine. No way I'd be able to buy comparable furniture for anywhere NEAR as cheap, so getting rid of them and buying new furniture would actually be more expensive. Plus...it just doesn't seem very logical to me. If you have furniture you like, and you don't have that much...why get rid of it? I really fail to see the upside of such an action.

The main upside would be if buying new furniture would cost less than moving it to a new location. I was initially working under the assumption that you, like me, had a lot of well used furniture that was at the point of falling apart. But since you have a lot of decent quality furniture, you're right that it doesn't make as much sense to buy new stuff. Anyway, I wish you good luck in moving. By the way, have you sold your apartment yet? One of my other friends has a friend who is looking for housing.
