Private Radio

Wow, I can't believe it's August already. Why do summers always move so fast? I've been at SLC for almost an entire month now, but it still feels like it's only been a couple weeks.

We're starting to get memos about openning day at Sarah Lawrence. That means I'm gonna have to start looking into registering for classes. I've decided to drop by the Registrar's office the week of the 15th, ten days before registration, and find out what I have to do to enroll in one of the graduate writing seminars.

Furthermore I've discovered that SLC does indeed have a radio station. I was poking around on their website the other day and was mildly shocked by the amateur quality of it. I guess I'm spoiled having DJed on the 10th highest ranking college radio station in the nation for four years. But the differences are just so stark. Radio was a big thing at Knox and it was something I knew I wanted to be involved in when I was applying to college. As a perspective student WVKC was one of Knox's primary selling points in my mind. At Knox everyone wants to be on the radio and most poeple get the chance. The station heads are usually very cool (Mike Sweeney notwithstanding), and the staff are well trained and professional (for the most part.) It's a REAL fucking radio station staffed by students who REALLY love it.

At SLC on the other hand, radio isn't a very big deal. This is afterall a wacky progressive college where the students don't have majors or grades. Most of them are busy trying to save the rainforest or learn about social policy in Guatamala. Traditional communications and media don't seem to figure highly in anyone's curriculum. As a result WSLC appears understaffed to my eyes. Their typical broadcast day doesn't even begin until 3:00 PM and only goes until 1:00 AM or so. Some days broadcast doesn't begin until 5:00 PM. Is that not crazy? Back at 'VKC the broadcast day begins at 6:00 AM and goes straight through till 2:00 or 3:00 AM. Now THAT'S fucking college radio.

Why Am I going on this crazy radio rant? Because I'm thinking about emailing the station heads and asking if there might be a spot for me this term. WSLC may not be 'VKC but I miss doing radio. I haven't broadcast a show in about three years. I'm so hungry to start again I've already begun making playlists. I don't even know if the station is open to staff or graduate students. I checked out all the DJ profiles on the WSLC website and they all belong to undergrads. If nothing else I'm hoping my four years of experience and love of college radio will get my foot in the door. With any luck interest goes as far at WSLC as it did at 'VKC.

And I would like to report that the food at SLC SUCKS! Yes, yes, yes I know, everyone complains about college food no matter what school they attend, but the toxic waste they serve at SLC is a special kind of atrocious. We used to complain about the food at Knox but DAMN! I did not realize how good I had it back in G-burg till I came here. At Knox there were options and those options were good. There was pasta in the caf, not the best pasta, but it was edible. There was meat, there was yummy pizza of all varieties, tons of cereal. The Gizmo had cheese sticks, and bread sticks and french fries and burgers and all other manner of greasy delights. The Oak Room had chocolate chip pancakes. Most nights you could find something to eat on campus. Not so at SLC. The Pub (SLC's answer to the Gizmo) serves a narrow selection of food. They serve two types of soup each day, lunch meat sandwishes, and the most disgusting pizza I've ever had the displeasure of consuming. That's pretty much it. It all tastes like cardboard. I can understand why all the dorms at SLC have kitchens. Who could live off this stuff for a year?

Brother Michael is turning 34 tomorrow. He's having his party at this bar on Rivington called The Magician. I'm going, Greg is going, heck even MOM is going! I haven't stepped foot in a bar in three years. This will either be very dull or very interesting.

WVKC radio was pretty damn good and a lot of fun. Cori Jeffrey and I had a show once called "The Dark & Happy Hour", myself being "Dark", and Cori being "Happy". She played all feel good music, and I played all industrial goth, but in my opinion the highlight of the show were the bits of conversation. Cori said nothing but positive, happy thing in a traditional radio voice, while I played the part of a grungy voiced goth bent on causing turmoil in the most depressing of ways.

...

Perhaps a bit silly... but if you were involved with radio at all at Knox, you'd be doing those students and that school a service by being a DJ there. :)

It surprises me that such a "progressive" school with grand, macroscopic ideals would have such a low emphasis on communications and media. How do they expect to change anything if they can't communicate on the same level they set their ideals? Hmm...

The Magician is a fine place. Plenty o' room for a party.
